Le Petit Nicolas (2009, 91 minutes, French with English subtitles)
Based on a series of French children’s books, written by René Goscinny and illustrated by the celebrated cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé, Laurent Tirard’s ,Petit Nicolas is a likable, sentimental celebration of middle-class France in the late 1950s and early 60s. Life is seen through the eyes of the sweet-natured, innocent nine-year-old Nicolas, who respects his parents and teachers, has fun playing with his schoolmates and is shy with girls. He only gets troubled (and comically rebellious) when he erroneously comes to believe his mother is pregnant and that he’ll have to make way for a baby brother.
